The Nitun Reserve in Guatemala may not be the most luxurious place for a vacation one would expect, but however, there is still something very unique in the tranquility and peace that it could offer. Imaging you could just laze around in the hammock while watching the hummingbirds hovering right above you. And to enable the guests to see those six different species of the tiny but colorful birds performing their acrobatic acts, special feeders are hung in various places in this eco-lodge.
Nitun was setup by a former owner of a coffee plantation alongside the Lake Peten Itza. It is actually situated in the rain forest with palm-thatched buildings built from wood among the trees along the shoreline and rocks. If one is expecting a corporate styled hotel, then one would be disappointed because the lodgings are made with rough stone and log floors with very simple furnishing. This is to blend in with the environment. Fans, fly screens, and private bathrooms with hot water shower are available.
The restaurant, bar and lounge are located in the central lodge which is a two-story house. Foods are prepared in open-styled kitchen that could be acclaimed as some of the best in the country. Since Nitun is located in the rain forest, guests could spend their days exploring the forest on wildlife treks and taking boating trips in the surrounding lake.
Since Nitus is surrounded by a nature reserve, the owners operates things on a strict ecological manner.
